A Collaboration With Panavision: Phedon Papamichael, ASC, GSC

The filmmaker reflects on the creative dialogue between cinematography and directing.

“I’ve always thought of myself not so specifically as a cinematographer,” says Phedon Papamichael, ASC, GSC. Indeed, the renowned director of photography has also directed numerous features of his own, and as he shares in this video, he has found that all parts of the filmmaking process — including working with actors, editors, and composers — inform one another. Here, Papamichael also reflects on the key lessons he’s learned from his multiple collaborations with directors Alexander Payne (on the features Sideways, The Descendants, Nebraska and Downsizing) and James Mangold (Identity, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day, Ford v Ferrari, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and the upcoming A Complete Unknown).
